Flooding!, Lovely Riding, The Couple On A Tandem, Parade Biking

Flooding in ND caused me to change my route today, but it ended up being positively lovely!

I left Stanley this morning. I couldn't wait. Their free camping in the city park was pretty sketchy, and also infested with spiders. It was all I could do not to run around screaming this morning when I saw that my bags were covered in spiders (not to mention having to flick the off myself constantly). Yech.

I had a funny reminder that it is the 4th of July today, when I accidentally biked into the parade route in a tiny town on my route (Berthold, I believe). I had taken a right off of 2 in order to get to a smaller side highway. As I was getting into town I noticed all the fire trucks lined up. Then I saw the men in uniform, then I saw the flags lining the street. Then I realized I was in the parade-oops! How embarrassing. And I didn't even have makeup on.

As I continued my day, I had a close encounter with the previously-mentioned mythical Couple On A Tandem. I had stopped to chat with a local couple who was cycling the other way, and they told me that The Couple was staying with them!

Highway 2 is still under several feet of water starting in Minot, so I stopped for a chicken sandwich on the outskirts of the city and planned my reroute. Lots if the highways on ND are flooded right now, so I was consulting with the DOT here.

I decided to take 83S and then get on 200E, which will let me hook back up with my Adventure Cycling route around Cooperstown. I biked 50 miles from Minot down to Fort Stevenson State Park, which us positively divine right now. I have a campsite right on a bluff overlooking the lake. Gentle breeze, clear skies. The people nearest to me are playing Frank Sinatra, and the music is floating over to me on the breeze. Ahhhh.

Tomorrow I'll have a shorter day (today was about 100 miles), and bike to McClusky, or somewhere else along 200 that looks good. There isn't much of much around here, so I may not have many choices.

Happy 4th, and Happy Birthday Laerke!
