Heat, storms, and bugs

After doing my laundry in Havre, I got my bike fixed up and then went on the local underground tour. It smelled musty. A family that was also on the tour happened to be from Olympia, and they were remarking on how much better this tour was than the Seattle underground tour.

Just like Seattle, there was a great fire in Havre. Unlike Seattle, it only burned down one square block. However, this is a small town and so one block is a lot. The businesses moved into the basements of the burned out buildings.

The things that I thought were most interesting were the chemicals.

Drugs used to be legal!

The next day was pretty grueling. I biked 90 miles In nearly 100 degree heat to Malta. Zero shade and hundreds of flies that would swarm as soon as you slowed to less than 10 mph. I was so hot that by the end of the day I a splitting headache and could barely see straight. After walking around the frozen section of Albertson's for a while I got a motel room, as the sky was looking mighty dark and threatening.

A tornado warning was put out after getting set in my room, but as it was still pretty calm (some rain), so I was trying to cook myself some dinner in front if the motel (pretty ghetto, I know). All of a sudden the wind started blowing so hard that all the dirt seemed like it was picked up and thrown in my face. I ran inside to eat my (now dirty) noodles and watch the show. The weatherman was saying stay away from the windows, but I couldn't help it, it was too cool! Here's a pic right before it really started:

Today was much cooler, and I made the 70 miles to Glasgow in no time. I saw these sculptures coming into town today- I really really want one.

I biked around town to try and find something to do, but this town is pretty lacking in the things department. Instead I've been reading on my kindle and snacking too much.

Missing everyone!

Update:
Am stopped in wolf point, after two flats along the way. PSHH. I thought I found the culprit after the first flat, but when the new tube went flat I found a tiny needle rock sticking through the tire. Eating some chips now to regain motivation before continuing to Poplar.

  1. Looks like Emi popped into Poplar for a pop and then popped back onto her bike to fly on down the road. Where will she stop? Will she ever stop?

  2. PS bottle on left of 1st picture is probably trichloracetic acid, certainly from the last 30 years. We have some in the Smith lab: I'll be using it this afternoon.

Pharmacists might use it for treating warts or for cosmetic chemical peels.

PPS: Middle bottle - if the opium didn't get you, the Lead Acetate sure as heck would!
